Confessions of a Mobile Home Office Worker
By Jeff Zbar | July 12, 2008
I’m Jeff Zbar, and I’m a mobile home officer. Monday through Friday, and sometimes Fridays through Monday, I work from home.
And when my family travels, I work a little more. You see. I’m a mobile home officer. And nothing reveals this more than my current adventure: Home Office Highway. This three-week road trip is designed to reveal how an Internet jockey (I’m a writer who uses a laptop and broadband Internet connection to ply my trade) can work from anywhere — if he has a few simple tools.
To me, “simple tools” are designed as those that replicate my home office. In this case, it’s my laptop, my Verizon broadband access card, and a bit of understanding from my clients, my family — and myself. But more on that later. It’s also about using things like Velcro cable wraps, a six-foot roll of heavy-duty adhesive Velcro (to a guy, Velcro is next to duct tape and Vice-Grips).
After about 10 years of taking extended family vacations — typically from aboard the family minivan and a hotel room — I’ve learned the tools and tips to work effectively from places other than my home office. We’ve taken two weeks on the Jersey Shore, three weeks in northern Ontario skiing, and regular weekends in such places as Naples, Marco Island or Orlando, Florida.
This year, we decided to travel aboard an RV — with a full-on home office in place.
But Home Office Highway is about more than me working and my family understanding my needs. It’s about revealing how anyone (at least those who use the Internet to do the bulk of their job) can work from a remote office.
