Time for an organizational redesign…

By Jeff Zbar | October 23, 2007

I’ve worked from my current home office for the better part of 11 years. From the beginning, organization was important - nay, critical - to my success. I have a 10-foot-long, custom-built desk with lots of drawer and cabinet space. It has a wirechase to conceal Ethernet, printer and phone cords and cables, and an under-desk enclosure for my CPU. At the time we had it built (around 1994 when we were living and I was working in our former home), it was perfect. It still is. But my environment has lost my favor. So it’s time for a make-over.

I hate to ditch the desk. It’s as close to perfect as a desk can be, and even affords me a view off my shoulder of the front yard and my kids at play. So I think my make-over will start with the walls, seating, shelves and everything else in my space.

You see, I was one of those kids who every few months would totally rearrange my bedroom. I’d slide my bed against one wall, and push my desk in the newly-freed space. Nothing was safe or sacred. Posters would be pulled, relocated or tossed (except for Farrah. NO ONE touched Farrah!). My turntable and stereo would move near some other outlet, and I’d tack wire to the walls to mount my speakers on high. This wasn’t planned. It was the frenzied impetuousness borne of a grade-schooler’s afternoon whim.

I’m no longer a gradeschooler, though I have three. And I’m no longer (that) impetuous. But I want to make over my office. So I’ve got my 2008 Ikea catalog and a bunch of ideas.

Have some ideas of your own to help me out? Send them along to jeff at chief home officer dot com (just retype in an email, or post a comment). Nothing’s sacred. Anything goes. Even Farrah. Alas, she left me many, many years ago.
