“Take a look at my desktop…”

By Jeff Zbar | October 18, 2007

Desk

“Take a look at my desktop, it’s the only one I got…Not much of a desktop, used to seem to have a lot…” OK, so Supertramp would be aghast at my adaptation of their 1970s hit Breakfast in America (though no worse so than the current remake by Gym Class Heroes, I imagine). No sooner did I clean it off on Friday afternoon as part of my ritual to finish the week with a clean desk, than Monday rolled around - with its mail and files and folders and the like - and my desk was awash in clutter again. Yet like it or not, this is my modus operandi: Clean it up, mess it up, clean it up again. The process works for me, and I tend to know where everything is - during the chaos, and at week’s end, when it all finds a place in its rightful home. It reminds me of the poster than used to hang in my father’s office: “Please don’t clean up the mess in my office. You’ll confuse me and screw up my whole world.”

So now take a look at my desktop. Cleared, but for my BlackBerry, and rays of afternoon sun shining upon a cleared space. Tell me: What’s your style? Clean or cluttered - or a bit of both?
