Making the Most of Down Time…

By Jeff Zbar | September 18, 2007

How do you stay productive? Shaving during the commute? Microwaving instant coffee? Time-shifting your day to work at what otherwise would be quiet times in the home office - so you can be there when the kids need you? How about tapping into some wi-fi?

I’ve written before about the benefits of wireless fidelity (or wi-fi) Internet  access. Whether you’re at home, the local cafe or in a city with a muni-web or city-wide wi-fi access, when you have a wireless-enabled laptop, you’re good to go.

Yesterday, I had my laptop warmed up and humming as I was watching my son practice ice hockey. How? His rink offers wi-fi for free. Once I realized that, I got into the habit of packing the HP into a laptop case, tossing it (gently) into the car with his hockey gear, and powering up once he’s in the locker room getting ready for his hour of ice. All told, I can crank out almost two hours of productivity. It’s better than just watching my hard-earned money skate away on a sheet of ice.

So how and where can you boost your productivity? By bringing the laptop to the ice rink or gymnasium (assuming it has wi-fi), or finding a nearby cafe that does? By bringing some reading or paper work next time you know you’re going to be out of pocket for a bit? Or even leaving some docs in the car - in case you find yourself with a little time to blow?

Your time is your own to make of it what you will. What will you make of your time today?
