Space. A Final Frontier

By Jeff Zbar | September 13, 2007

When I created my first home office back in 1989, my desk became the repository for all things clerical. Papers, files, folders, my phone and Apple IIc computer all shared space atop a folding banquet table. I had a small file cabinet I’d kept from my college days that served as my drawers, and a portable shelving unit on which my books and other stuff went. It wasn’t ideal, but hey, it was my “office.” And as a 25-year-old first-time entrepreneur, I was more concerned about generating business than the organizing business. Over time, things changed…
Today, my office - while not the picture of organization - lives by the motto of “A place for everything, and everything (occasionally) in its place.” It’s about maximizing available space. In my home office closet I built shelves and storage areas that go with the large four-drawer file cabinet I purchased “scratch-and-dent” from Office Depot. My custom desk has four drawers and plenty of cabinet space. And most importantly, my walls have shelves for the general detritus of life and plastic hanging folder holders to help keep papers off my desk.

Organization in the home office is a work in progress. Whether you’re a home-based business owner, a teleworker or telecommuter, or a head of household handling family finances, keeping the office (somewhat) tidy can keep business flowing and your mind from wandering. Efficiency grows. Productivity soars.  And frankly, you’re blowing less time looking for stuff than finding what you need and getting on with business - and the business of life.

Besides, banquet tables have more important roles - like being a nifty place to stack stuff in the garage. One organized room at a time, my friends, one organized room at a time…
