On The Road (Once) Again…

By Jeff Zbar | August 31, 2007

It’s Friday morning. The sun hasn’t yet risen over the eastern horizon. And I’m in my office, ferreting out cables, and USB flash drives, and my Verizon USB wireless broadband adapter, and all the other things I will take with me on the road today. It’s travel hockey season, and we’re headed out on the road. Again.

Travel hockey is this cockamamie sport where otherwise smart adults drop way too much money to see their grade-school kids play an outrageously expensive sport in a climate that’s way too cold - 600 or more miles from home. We did it before, and we’ll do it again. Gladly. Because we married a Canadian, and it’s been transfused into my blood.

What’s that got to do with USB adapters and flash drives and cables? If I’m going to travel, I’d better prepare to work from the road. We’ll be on the team bus for the better part of 10 hours traveling to Atlanta, so I’ll want my power transformer for the HP Pavilion laptop, and my broadband adapter for anytime-anywhere Internet. Just because I’m on the road doesn’t mean work stops. Home officers and teleworkers have grown accustomed to working from anywhere: a hotel, a ferry crossing the Delaware River, even a bus rumbling down I-75 - with 16 13-year-old boys wrecking havoc on my senses and sensibilities.

But we love this sport. I have to. It’s apparently in my blood. As long as I can work and bill from the road, I can keep telling myself that - and keep paying for ice time…
