What’s your rhythm?
By Jeff Zbar | August 28, 2007
Early bird? Night owl? What type of fowl are you? I work from home, with three kids, three school start times, and three sets of extracurriculars in tow. Toss in my own home business schedule that the wife/mother’s own scheduling needs, and things can get downright crazed in the home and home office. The best way I’ve found to make my life work in this circus is to bow to my unique circadian rhythm. I’m an early bird, often up and in the office before 5 a.m. Nothing wrong with that; I make breakfasts and lunches, while the wife sleeps in. But it also means I’m often asleep before 10 p.m., where Robbie tends to stay up later. Nothing wrong there either. In our household, the two parents’ schedules tend to jibe well. I’m early, Robbie’s up later. The kids are covered. We’re good to go.
Unlike some militaristic approach to home schedule discipline, we’re more a “take it as it comes” family. We acknowledge our unique styles and needs and let them take the lead. What’s your style? Send me a comment – if only to let me know I’m not alone in my crazed circadian rhythms. If you’re reading this before dawn, all the better…
