One Mom, Two Kids, Three Dogs and Grandma - That’s Family Life
By Christina | August 28, 2007
What is a functional family? I have heard it said that families nowadays are dysfunctional unless there is a mom and a dad, 2.2 kids a dog and maybe a hamster. That’s bunk if you ask me. Functional to me means you are happy, you…love each other and there is genuine care for one another. I have what some might call a dysfunctional family. In my house you have me, a 39 year old woman who is currently 6.5 months pregnant, without a husband. My daughter is 10 years old and my son is 12. I share custody with my ex-husband and the kids go back and forth almost daily from house to house without missing a beat. The man I am pregnant by now is not the same father of my two first children. I decided to do this on my own - sort of, it is a long story perhaps for another day. My mom is a social worker at Jackson Memorial Hospital and works the night shift. My ex-fiance is very involved in our lives and continues to see the children on a regular basis and they do care for him probably as mych as he does for them. In addition he cares for me a great deal and I know I can count on him if I need to and vice versa.
The dogs, well they don’t contribute so much but we love em anyhow, there’s Fluffy a toy poodle, Chatsee a silky terrier and Stella, another toy poodle. That;s my family and I don’t think we are dysfunctional at all - as a matter of fact, I don’t like that term. Functional or not depends on how you see yourself and your family. I can assure you there are plenty of picket white fenced two parent homes with serious imbalances.
Share your family with me and let’s put an end to the judgments and labels!
