A six letter word that strikes fear! MOVING

By Christina | August 25, 2007

Picture your home, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, perhaps a garage, a family room, dining room, den, play area… now picture all the stuff you have in each drawer, on each shelf and in each nook and cranny (I think English Muffins when I hear nook and cranny)… now think what it would be like to box it all up, label it and move it to another place only to reogranize it all again.

It’s a nightmare! Here are some tips to help you keep this often unpleasant experience as easy to tolerate as possible:

  1. Color Coordinate - Give each family member a color. For example, give Johnny green; green tote boxes, green markers to label his bigger boxes, green packing tape.  Whatever you can think of to make finding each person’s things easier.
  2. Keep Important Papers With You - Don’t leave your passports, birth certificates, wills, etc in the hands of anyone else.  To the movers, your stuff is just stuff, to you it is irreplaceable.
  3. Use Your Luggage - Don’t haul empty suitcases to your new home.  Fill them with clothes, bed sheets, towels, anything you might want easy access to or just stuff you need to take with you anyhow.
  4. Pack ahead - If you are moving in the summer, you know you can start to pack all of your winter items well in advance.  That will make the process that much easier when crunch time comes.

There is never a perfect or seamless move but you can make it as smooth as possible by planning ahead and being organized.
