Closet Organizing 101

By Christina | August 24, 2007

When you walk into your closet do you feel completely overwhelmed? I am 6 months pregnant and part of my pregnancy symptoms are the need to organize or as others call it, “nest”.  In my closet are shoes, purses, clothes, jackets, old vcr’s, childrens memory boxes, towels, my change collection, along with dust bunnies an iron, a brush and God only knows what else.  I recently set out to organize my closet and realized there is a whole day of work here.  Here are some tips that really helped me…First, don’t look at the whole job you will just freak out.

  1. Break it down into clotes to give away, clothes I wear all the time, winter clothes, pants, shirts, etc.
  2. Next, do you need shoe space?  This is an easy one to fix.  Go to Home Depot and buy a shoe rack that easily fits over the closet door or install a low shelf so you can place one row of shoes over the other, this frees up space on the lower part of your closet.
  3. Purses, belts, other accessories - buy bins for these items or install hooks in the closet and hang your accessories.
  4. Install high shelving for items you do not use regularly. For me, that would be the vcrs and the kids memory boxes.

There is at least a start for you.  When you are done you will have found space, cleaned up and gotten rid of clutter that you probably had not looked at in months or years.
