A Concoction Called Organization

By Jeff Zbar | August 23, 2007

Home. Home office. School. Business. Work. Extracurriculars. Pastimes. Canines. In today’s home, obligations abound, creating what could become a convoluted, chaotic mess.

It’s the first week of school, and already conflicts are fostering insanity. I’m speaking on small business networking tonight, at the same time that our son has hockey practice and one of our daughters is coaching cheerleading. Sometimes, it seems the two-parent household could use a third caregiver - or a chauffer.

What’s a family to do? Break out the calendars, call in the support troops, and organize. Each week, we compare calendars (Robbie’s on paper; I’m on Microsoft Outlook. I’m probably going to move the family to an online calendar, like Google - though our digital/paper adaptation has worked thus far, especially since Robbie doesn’t power up the PC more than once a week). All the while, we ride-share where we can, and our extended family has gotten used to the calls for carpooling support. We called one grandparent to drive Zack to hockey, while Robbie takes Nicole to cheerleading (in six months, she’ll have her license. We’re counting down the seconds). Zoe, 9, will tag along for ride - wondering all the while what’s the big deal.

All this, and it’s just the first week of school. Oh, how I miss the dog days of summer…
