Travel Decompression…

By Jeff Zbar | August 19, 2007

As much fun as it is to prepare for a trip - gathering my stuff, buying extra gadgets, organizing my belongings and imagining the perfect office on the road - that’s how loathesome it is to come home. This week, I returned to my home office that was neat - but turned upside-down in very short order. A tub filled with two weeks of mail was awaiting me, and my Logitech Kinetik laptop backpack itself was awash in papers, receipts and hardware that would be needing a home in my home office. Thankfully, we were able to execute one of my top rules when traveling with the family: Get home early enough to spend a day or two putting stuff away. We came home Thursday; Friday and Saturday were spent sorting and filing. Mail was ditched or categorized (I’m a believer in the Touch Mail Once philosophy), and stuff began finding a home in my home office. Meanwhile, Robbie tackled the suitcases and the girls’ four duffle bags from sleepaway camp. It’s Sunday, and I hope to have everything done in time for my band to play at 2 p.m. Man, would that be music to my ears…

Actually, the “get-home-early-so-you-don’t-freak-out” rule is amazing! Whenever I get two days of work, I will try to stuff as many activities as possible so I don’t feel I’m missing anything. But the result is always that I return more exhausted than before to work because I know my life is a mess and needs to be organized. The anxiety of having things out of order outdoes my need to go somewhere new.
I will also try the Touch Mail Once philosophy. Too many times I find myself juggling pieces of mail I should have already liquidated.
